Parliament has unanimously confirmed Richard Luhanga as the new Inspector General (IG) of the Malawi Police Service (MPS).
The confirmation followed a voice vote in the House after Minister of Homeland Security, Peter Mukhito, moved a motion in accordance with Section 154(2) of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi.
In his remarks, Mukhito described Luhanga as “a man of visionary reform and unwavering dedication to law enforcement excellence.” He added: “With your support, Mr. Luhanga will serve with transparency, accountability, and a resolute focus on safeguarding our nation’s peace and security.”
Luhanga, a seasoned law enforcement officer, previously served as Commissioner for the Northern Region.
He succeeds Merlyn Yolamu as head of the police service.
