A serious chemical spill has prompted the evacuation of approximately 1,000 residents in Weatherford, Oklahoma, following a lorry crash late on Wednesday night. The incident occurred around 10pm local time, leading to the release of ammonia and subsequent emergency alerts issued to the public.
Emergency services are currently on the scene, with at least 36 individuals hospitalised due to exposure to the toxic substance. Authorities have warned that the air quality in the area is unsafe for breathing. Witnesses reported seeing emergency responders wearing gas masks as they went door to door to alert residents of the danger.
Weatherford Emergency Manager Mike Karlin confirmed that a tanker was found leaking in the parking lot of a Holiday Inn Express. Upon arrival, emergency personnel discovered a chemical spillage and individuals exhibiting symptoms of respiratory distress.
In response to the crisis, local schools have cancelled classes, and Southwest Oklahoma State University has also suspended its sessions for the day. An emergency alert has been issued, advising residents to evacuate north to Davis Avenue and from Washington Avenue to Lyle Road. The Pioneer Cellular Center, located at the SWOSU Basketball Gym, has been designated as a safe location for evacuees.
Authorities are urging anyone experiencing medical symptoms to call 911 or seek assistance from medical personnel stationed at Ace Hardware. The situation remains fluid as emergency services continue to manage the spill and ensure the safety of the community.
