Two young individuals have tragically lost their lives following a car accident on the M1 motorway. The incident occurred late on Wednesday night, around 11.36pm, on the southbound carriageway between junctions 37 and 36.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene after reports indicated that a grey BMW Saloon had veered off the road and collided with a tree. Despite the rapid response, both the driver, a man in his 20s, and his passenger, a woman in her 20s, were pronounced dead at the scene.
South Yorkshire Police have confirmed that they are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision. A spokesperson stated, "We have launched an investigation following the tragic death of a man and a woman in a fatal collision on the M1. We’re appealing for witnesses, footage and information to help us understand the circumstances that led to the collision."
The police are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage of the vehicle prior to the crash. They have urged the public to come forward with any information that could assist in their enquiries.
Family liaison officers are currently supporting the families of the deceased during this difficult time. The police have expressed their condolences, stating, "Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."
