Toyota Motor Corporation has recalled over 126,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles due to a potential engine failure issue that could lead to crashes.
Toyota, which owns the luxury brand Lexus, has recalled 2022-2024 Toyota Tundra, 2022-2024 Lexus LX, and 2024 Lexus GX vehicles equipped with a V35A engine, the company wrote in an announcement on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website.
Most of the recalled vehicles are 2022-2024 Toyota Tundras, per the announcement.
The company said debris from the manufacturing process may contaminate the engine and cause the main bearings to fail, potentially causing the engine to stall. If the engine stalls or the vehicle suffers a loss of drive power, there is an increased risk of crash.
The recall is an extension of an issue reported in May 2024, or NHTSA recall number 24V381. That recall included 102,092 vehicles, including the 2022-2023 Lexus LX and the 2022-2023 Toyota Tundra.
USA TODAY contacted Toyota and Lexus on Nov. 13 to inquire if there have been any reports of injuries or crashes due to this issue.
Which vehicles have been recalled?
Toyota said in its recall announcement that the company is recalling 126,691 vehicles.
Among the recalled vehicles are:
- 2022-2024 Toyota Tundra – 113,079 vehicles
- 2022-2024 Lexus LX – 9,895 vehicles
- 2024 Lexus GX – 3,717 vehicles
According to Toyota, the issue occurred at some point during production. The vehicles have a V35A engine and there is a possibility that engine machining debris may not have been cleared from the engine during manufacturing. The debris may have contaminated the engine assembly during the production process.
Toyota still working to find a solution to the issue
Toyota said the company is working on finding a solution for the issue. Once the solution is ready, Toyota will handle the repairs for free.
The company plans to notify dealers on Nov. 6. The company said it will likely notify owners about a solution between Dec. 22 and Jan. 5.
Owners with questions can contact Toyota's customer service line at 1-800-331-4331.
The NHTSA’s recall number is 25V767000. Toyota’s recall numbers are 25TB14 and 25TA14. Lexus’ recall numbers are 25LB07 and 25LA07.
