After a summer which could have been derailed by the damaging Alexander Isak transfer saga, the fact Newcastle United were able to bring six new faces to St James' Park before the window closed, was seen as something of an achievement.

Eddie Howe, operating without a sporting director after Paul Mitchell's surprise exit, largely managed to address the issues most agreed were most pressing for his squad.

A new right-sided forward was signed in the shape of Anthony Elanga, Aaron Ramsdale offered first-team competition for Nick Pope, while Malick Thiaw's arrival was seen as the final piece of a back four that could serve Newcastle for years to come.
