Rombiolo Bakery Cafe

A New Jersey bakery known for its South American pastries and European techniques was named the best in the state by "The Takeout."

Rombiolo Bakery Cafe in Bloomfield opened in 2013 and was founded by Claudio and Natalia, its website says. The bakery’s name pays homage to Natalia’s family, who come from Rombiolo, a small village in Calabria, Italy.

Claudio, who has more than 30 years of experience in pastry arts, leads the baking operation. “From savory empanadas to delicate pastries, our products are baked from scratch and made with love,” the owners wrote.

The bakery’s menu includes empanadas, bizcochos, ham and cheese croissants, alfajores, cinnamon rolls, flan with dulce de leche, baguettes, tortuga rolls and pastry trays. Customers can also find coffee, cappuccinos, iced drinks and traditional items like yerba mate.

"The Takeout" recommended the bakery's masitas, a dozen small pastries that highlight the bakery’s mixed influences, along with bizcochos, a classic Uruguayan breakfast pastry. “Unsurprisingly, there are some tasty-looking savory empanadas on offer, too.”

The Takeout explained that choosing one bakery per state is no small task. “Narrowing a list down to just one exceptional bakery in every state is no easy feat. We're blessed with so many options. Nonetheless, some bakeries deserve the extra praise for their inventive and beautiful creations, commitment to high-quality ingredients, and, in some cases, their longevity.”
