A 32-year-old Bridgeton man has been charged after he fled the scene after hitting a pedestrian, authorities announced Thursday, Nov. 13.
At 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, Bridgeton police responded to South Avenue and Garfield Avenue after Steven Calloway, a 62-year-old Bridgeton resident was struck by a pickup truck Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae said.
Calloway was hospitalized at Cooper University Hospital and was pronounced dead on Tuesday, Nov. 11.
An investigation revealed the driver, Brayan Laverde-Torres exited the vehicle after striking Calloway, looked underneath the truck and then left the scene, Webb-McRae said.
The pickup truck was later located in the backyard of Laverde-Torres' residence with the license plates removed, Webb-McRae said.
Laverde-Torres is charged with knowingly leaing the scene of an accident resulting in death, hindering apprehension and obstruction, Webb-McRae said.
