Windows. A bit of an odd concept.
Build a secure structure that protects you against the weather and predators, then cut gaping holes in the sides and roof and fill in those gaps with glass.
It was unthinkable in years gone by.
A home, or castle, did not have windows. They were an expensive luxury that weakened defenses and structures and made it difficult to keep a building comfortable.
The past hundred years have seen a radical change in design due to improvements in glass and window manufacture, combined with a recognition of good thermal insulation and improvements in the air conditioning equipment we use.
Window-to-wall ratio, WWR, the percentage of exterior wall surface to windows, has increased in the last 50-plus years with a slight hiccup occurring in the late ’80s/early ’90s
