Police have defended investigations into a suspected murder on the NSW far south coast, as they look for a missing weapon in nearby wetlands more than one month later.
Authorities have confirmed they have been conducting searches in wetlands in Bega for a "small, double-edged dagger" believed to have been used to kill Gordon Kessey on October 6.
The Nowra man was fatally stabbed during a violent altercation at East Street in Bega between two groups who knew each other, and was found by authorities in a nearby park.
South Coast Police District Superintendent Darren Brand said his team was looking for a knife believed to have been discarded shortly after the incident.
"We haven't ruled out any particular line of inquiry or any motive at this stage," Superintendent Brand said.
