Ben Dreyfuss is coming forward with his own truth about his famous family.
The journalist and son of Oscar-winning actor Richard Dreyfuss got candid on his fractured relationship with his father in a series of social media posts on Thursday, Nov. 13.
"Everyone assumes my siblings and I are wealthy from our dad and we're all a bit too uncomfortable to make it clear, but we have no money from my dad," Dreyfuss, the eldest son of Richard Dreyfuss, wrote on X. "My dad has no money. If he did, we wouldn't get it since we've been estranged ever since some complicated family drama to do with MeToo."
Dreyfuss said the breakdown of his relationship with Richard Dreyfuss stems from an incident several years ago. Ben Dreyfuss, who allegedly was managing Richard's Twitter account at the time, wrote a post in support of his younger brother, Harry Dreyfuss, who had come forward with allegations of sexual assault against actor Kevin Spacey.
"That tweet prompted someone to MeToo my dad. He blames us for that," Ben Dreyfuss continued. "This led to years of acrimony."
What did Richard Dreyfuss' son say about Kevin Spacey incident?
In 2017, actor Harry Dreyfuss alleged that Spacey groped him at age 18 while dad Richard Dreyfuss was in the room.
Harry Dreyfuss recounted his allegations of the 2008 incident in a self-written account published on Buzzfeed.com. Spacey directed Richard Dreyfuss in a 2009 production of the play "Complicit" at the Old Vic Theatre in London.
"It happened one night when the three of us were alone in Kevin's apartment rehearsing my father's lines," Harry Dreyfuss wrote in his Buzzfeed essay. "My father didn't see, and I didn't tell him about the incident for many years. Instead, I spent the next nine years telling people the story at parties for laughs."
At the time, Buzzfeed quoted Bryan Freedman, a lawyer representing Spacey, denying Dreyfuss' account with the statement: "Let me be clear, Mr. Spacey absolutely denies the allegations."
USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Spacey and Richard Dreyfuss for comment.
Spacey's Hollywood career was derailed in 2017 following sexual assault allegations by fellow actor Anthony Rapp. In July 2023, after a series of additional assault allegations from other accusers, the "House of Cards" star was acquitted of nine charges at the end of a four-week long trial in London. A year and a half later, Spacey was sued by an unnamed individual at London's High Court for alleged sexual abuse.
Richard Dreyfuss' son details impact of Kevin Spacey claims, MeToo allegation
Aside from Harry Dreyfuss' claims of sexual assault, Ben Dreyfuss wrote on X that an unnamed woman's sexual misconduct allegations against Richard Dreyfuss added to the growing strain on their relationship.
Richard Dreyfuss previously denied writer Jessica Teich's allegations that he harassed her and exposed himself to her in the mid-1980s.
"The woman who MeToo'd my dad I think had a very stupid idiot story, but it didn't matter because it was right around that time when all of this was going on crazy," Dreyfuss explained. "Anyways, it all led to fights for years and then in 2022, it blew up to the point of [not] speaking anymore."
Dreyfuss said that while he's "spent years trying to repair" the relationship, the "Jaws" star is "not going to ever meet me halfway, and I'm tired of being quiet about it." He added: "I encourage you if you meet my father to ask him for his version. I'm curious to know what it is."
"I appreciate people saying nice things to me, but I really don't need that and didn't post this for that," Dreyfuss concluded. "I mostly posted it because I was tired of not talking about it and wanted to rip the Band-aid off. But on a deeper level, I probably just posted it to get my father's attention."
If you are a survivor of sexual assault, you can call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800.656.HOPE (4673) or visit hotline.rainn.org/online and receive confidential support.
