Montrealers are bracing for a full weekend without bus and métro service as a transit strike collides with a messy mix of freezing rain and snow.

Quebec’s labour tribunal has approved a 48-hour strike by bus drivers, métro operators and station agents, with everything but paratransit service set to grind to a halt at 4 a.m. Saturday.

With Premier François Legault ruling out any intervention to stop the strike, a settlement between the Société de transport de Montréal and the union remains the only hope. Mediation is ongoing.

Barring a last-minute deal, service will not resume until Monday at 4 a.m. for buses and 5:30 a.m. for the métro.

Paratransit service — buses for people with disabilities or mobility issues — will be maintained during the 48-hour strike, the STM says.
