A couple from Winnipeg has pleaded guilty to multiple counts of animal cruelty after a police investigation revealed they produced and sold videos depicting the torture and killing of animals. Irene Lima and Chad Kabecz were arrested in October 2024 following an anonymous tip to Manitoba's provincial veterinarian. The tip concerned a Telegram group called Goddess May Barefoot Premium Crush, which had over 100 members and shared videos of animals being crushed to death. Crown attorney Boyd McGill informed a Winnipeg court that the couple's activities involved more than 90 animals, including kittens, birds, and an axolotl. The videos were reportedly sold on the dark web, a part of the internet that requires special software to access and is not indexed by standard search engines. According to McGill, the Telegram group had a price list for various animals, with costs ranging from $5 for a baby mouse to $180 for a family of three kittens. Lima was said to have crushed the animals under her bare feet while Kabecz filmed the acts, which McGill noted often included sexual elements. "The content of the videos is proof of the animal cruelty counts. It is impossible to watch these videos and conclude that the animals are not suffering and in pain. Ms. Lima crushes them alive," McGill stated during the court proceedings. The evidence presented indicated that more than 97 animals were tortured and killed, including over 60 cats and kittens, seven birds, six rabbits, six hamsters, three goldfish, a frog, and an axolotl. Lima and Kabecz, who are currently in custody, each pleaded guilty to six counts of animal cruelty. They appeared in court in shackles, listening as the details of their case were read aloud. Police seized electronic devices from the couple, uncovering a significant collection of videos showing the killings and communications between Lima and Kabecz discussing their actions and plans to escalate their behavior. McGill also mentioned that entries in Lima's diary expressed her enjoyment in killing animals with her feet. Financial records indicated that the couple made approximately $2,800 from the sale of these videos between May and October 2024. Lima and Kabecz are expected to receive their sentences at a later date, pending the completion of court-ordered pre-sentence reports. McGill indicated that prosecutors plan to recommend the same sentence for both individuals, although the specific recommendations have not yet been disclosed.
