BETHESDA, Md. — Jenna Norton spent her entire career at the National Institutes of Health, but says this past year has been hard as the Trump administration’s new policies impacted her work.

“The termination of research midstream, screening research to make sure it aligned with the agency’s priorities, which amounted to scanning research for keywords, and delaying or terminating research that had certain words in it,” she said. “All of this was really damaging, not only to the research enterprise but also to the beneficiaries of that research.”

Norton says she felt it was her duty to speak up.

However on Thursday, as thousands of federal employees went back to work , her decades-long career came to an end when she was placed on administrative leave without explanation.
