LOUISVILLE, Ky. — People deep inside Kentucky’s hemp industry say they are making their voices heard about language in a legislative package to reopen the federal government, they say would wipe out the market . They held a pair of rallies on Friday in Lexington and Louisville.
Twenty-three-year-old Abram Phillips from Owenton has been a farmer his whole life.
“This year is my first on my own actual farm that I bought and owned. So, finally able to step into that field and carry on the family footsteps, I guess,” Phillips said.
He invested almost $900,000 in his farm. It’s 112 acres. He raises 88 acres of floral hemp and 20 head of cattle.
“I mean, I’m not really becoming a billionaire off of it, but it’s a lot better compared to what we can do with other crops,” Phillips said.
