TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - Pima County Flood Control is progressing with the Cortaro Narrows Training Structures project, aiming to install seven soil cement structures in the Santa Cruz River to enhance flood protection and ecosystem health.

Currently in Phase 2, the project stabilizes the riverbed, removes invasive species, and ensures proper water flow, protecting nearby neighborhoods from flooding. The construction, paused during the monsoon, will resume in October 2025 and continue through June 2026.

Phase 3 will focus on significant habitat restoration, including planting native species and collaborating with the Pascua Yaqui Nation to reintroduce culturally significant plants. Additionally, a wildlife ramp will be constructed to create a safe corridor for local species.
