Mounties say fear over multiple break-ins committed by a Halloween-costumed burglar in Carstairs has triggered a wave of vigilante action that’s disrupting their investigation.

The burglaries began in the early morning of Sept. 20, when a culprit entered two residences after skulking around their backyards in the town of 5,300 about 50 kilometres north of Calgary.

The suspect — clad in a black, hooded costume and mask who’s been dubbed by locals “Carstairs Creeper” — stole a purse in one unlocked home, then credit cards and cash in another through an unsecured door, say Didsbury RCMP. In at least one instance, the occupants were at home.
