KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) — Knoxville engineers are working with the Tennessee Department of Transportation to update three traffic signals on Clinton Highway as the busy road sees thousands of cars each day and growing congestion from the city’s population increase.

The upgrades target intersections around Crown Point Plaza, including Schaad Road and Old Callahan Drive, where traffic backups are common.

Gary Phillips lives near Clinton Highway. He said he avoids the road because of congestion.

“I mean, you come across the top of the hill and you’re just sitting. You’re waiting on that one light right here at Schaad Road, and it is quite a wait for you,” Phillips said.

Phillips adds evening traffic creates additional problems.
