A motorbike rider has died after crashing at high speed during a police pursuit in Sydney ‘s inner south overnight.

The 19-year-old man was travelling northbound on Southern Cross Drive in Zetland when officers tried to stop him shortly before midnight on Friday.

Assistant Commissioner David Driver told reporters officers tried to stop the motorbike after seeing it exceed the speed limit.

The rider did not stop, sparking a police pursuit, before crashing into the back of a van travelling ahead.

Officers rushed to assist him while awaiting paramedics, but he could not be saved.

A crime scene has been established, with specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit examining the area.

A critical incident has been declared and investigations are underway.
