ROCKFORD, Ill. — A local housing complex will soon be demolished.

The Rockford Housing Authority (RHA) confirmed that the last step to demolish the Fairgrounds property has been completed after gas lines were disconnected.

RHA said demolition equipment will move to the site over the weekend, and that full demolition is expected to start on the morning of Monday, Nov. 17.

The demolition comes after the Fairgrounds property saw multiple fires in September and October .

The property was approved for demolition in 2021, as the site was recognized as being obsolete.

RHA was said to be working with Northern Illinois Service, City of Rockford officials, and utility partners to make sure the destruction is carried out safely and with minimal disruption to the local community.
