ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —

Law enforcement agencies in New Mexico are utilizing license plate readers to track criminals, with recent successes including the arrest of a fugitive from New York and solving a deadly shooting.

The technology has been used multiple times in the state, including tracking a man in Deming accused of kidnapping a 15-year-old girl from Texas and assisting investigators in locating suspects involved in a deadly shooting inside a dorm room at UNM.

A key development in the investigation came through the use of license plate reader technology, which helped investigators track the suspect's movement and ultimately led to his location.

Most recently, Otero County deputies arrested a wanted fugitive from New York due to an alert from a license plate reader.
