Sewage overflowed into Portage Bay on Friday morning, according to Seattle Public Utilities, prohibiting water activities in the area.

Public Utilities found the sewage overflow near Fritz Hedges Waterway Park, spokesperson Brad Wong said. The overflow was caused by tree roots blocking a private sewer pipe.

Public Health — Seattle & King County advises people to avoid contact with potentially polluted water in the area. Water activities are prohibited, and the closure is expected to last until Nov. 21.

The utility notified nearby maritime businesses and posted signs along the north side of Portage Bay from Fritz Hedges Waterway Park to just west of the University Bridge, and along the south side of Portage Bay surrounding the University Bridge.
