GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. —

South Carolinians are seeing a spike in the number of foreclosure filings as homebuyers attempt to navigate higher housing costs and an ever-changing housing market.

New national data from Attom places South Carolina among the highest in the nation for rates of foreclosure, among Florida and Illinois.

In October, foreclosure starts, the initial phase of the legal process, rose 6%. This is a 20% rise compared to last year. Complete foreclosures were up 32% by year. In total, 36,766 properties in the United States were facing a type of filing, including default notices, scheduled auctions and bank repossessions.
