PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A teen boy is fighting for his life after police say he was hit by a possible impaired driver near a busy north Phoenix intersection Friday evening.

Phoenix police said the crash happened near 19th Avenue and Cactus Road just before 5 p.m. When officers arrived, they found the victim seriously hurt. He was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

At first, the driver reportedly involved first stayed on the scene, investigators said. However, he ran off as police arrived and was taken into custody by officers moments later. The driver was hospitalized and is being processed for DUI, authorities said.

Police said the area will be shut down as detectives piece together what led up to the crash. No other information has been released.
