PORTAGE, MI — With seconds remaining on the clock in the fourth quarter, Portage Central found themselves at the two-yard line.
They didn’t need the score.
Up 24-20 against Traverse City Central in the D2 regional championship on Friday, Nov. 14, all that was left to do was assemble in victory formation.
Senior quarterback Rylan McNally took a knee and the crowd at McCamley-Knight Field in Portage erupted.
A fist pump from Portage Central head coach Mick Enders followed a winning grin.
For the first time since 2013, the Mustangs were regional champs. The outcome wasn’t always that certain, though.
Portage Central trailed 13-10 at the half.
Their lone score was a kick return touchdown for junior Ben Coleman.
