James "Jim" Bertram, champion and namesake of the Canyon Lakes System in Lubbock, died Tuesday, Nov. 11. He was 84.

In a news release, Lubbock City Manager Jarrett Atkinson said Bertram's legacy will continue to impact citizens far into the future.

"Bertram was a progressive thinker and planner. From the late 1960s, he worked toward the future of Lubbock and its citizens," said Atkinson. "His impact on the community cannot be overstated — for decades, his dedication and vision shaped nearly every major project, touched countless lives, and his contributions to the community will continue to be felt for years to come."

Bertram was originally from in Skidmore, Texas — near Corpus Christi — and is a 1966 graduate of Texas Tech University, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Park Administr
