Joel Brown, known as "J.B.," a barber in downtown Albuquerque, was shot in his shop on Tuesday, and police are searching for the suspect, Jameel Waheed, who is still on the run.

Brown, a fierce advocate against gun violence, is recovering in the hospital after being shot in the stomach.

Patrick Barrett, a friend of Brown, told KOAT on Friday that his shooting "was devastating. I think he's a pillar in the community."

Brown and others had started a violence intervention program, meeting every other week to discuss ways to prevent gun violence and manage volatile situations.

Court documents reveal that Waheed, visiting from California, was the ex-boyfriend of Brown's spouse and had made numerous threats against her and Brown, including saying he "would shoot up their barbershop."
