CLEVELAND, Ohio – Three days after Veteran’s Day, Cuyahoga County officials celebrated the reopening of a specialized housing unit at the downtown jail designed to support incarcerated military veterans.
County Executive Chris Ronayne, Sheriff Harold Pretel and other local leaders on Friday marked the return of the Veterans Housing Unit, a refurbished pod inside the Cuyahoga County Corrections Center that offers targeted services to people who have served in the armed forces. The unit originally opened in 2016 but has been closed since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ronayne said the reopening reflects the county’s responsibility to meet the needs of veterans who become involved in the criminal justice system. On any given day, he estimated there are 40 veterans housed in the facility.
