EL MONTE — For the second year in a row, El Monte’s football season came to an end in the CIF playoff quarterfinals. This year’s heartbreak was a 21-14 Division 11 loss to Western Christian on Friday night.
Western Christian (12-0) had a go-ahead 60-yard touchdown run by Yoan Chairez and a 65-yard scoop-and-score fumble recovery to edge El Monte (8-4).
Western Christian advances to the semifinals next week and will play a home game against Baldwin Park.
“I thought we had it in the bag, but mistakes cost us,” El Monte quarterback Alex Aleman said. “Mistakes happen. That flag late in the fourth cost us. It was a good game overall, defense held it up.”
