DOWNEY – The St. Pius X–St. Matthias football team continued its quest to repeat as CIF Southern Section champions by coming back in the game’s final seconds to defeat Upland 31-28 in the Division 6 quarterfinals on Friday.
St. Pius quarterback Jassi Williams scored the game’s final three touchdowns, all on nearly identical plays, to power the comeback.
Williams completed 18 of 29 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown. He threw one interception. He led the Warriors on the ground with 95 yards on 18 carries and three rushing touchdowns.
Demari Nunley caught four passes for 80 yards and a touchdown. Elijah Ali recorded three sacks for the St. Pius defense.
Williams and his teammates were confident despite an early deficit.
