Officials on Friday identified a 51-year-old man who was arrested after being accused of shooting at an off-duty Lubbock police officer and his family in a vehicle Thursday afternoon in front of their west Lubbock home.

The investigation began after officers responded to a report of shots fired about 3:23 p.m. Thursday in the 6900 block of Genoa Avenue, according to a news release from Lubbock police.

Investigators believe 51-year-old Sylas Smart was involved in a dispute with a woman at a residence in the 6900 block of Genoa Avenue.

During the dispute, Smart is accused of going to an off-duty LPD officer’s nearby residence and repeatedly ringing his doorbell camera.

The off-duty officer observed Smart on his doorbell camera app and went home to see what Smart needed.
