YAKIMA — By no means are state quarterfinal volleyball matches supposed to be a cakewalk. The Selah Vikings made the reigning four-time Class 2A state champion Columbia River Rapids work for every point Friday.
A hard-fought, four-set victory by the Rapids came with a number of curveballs thrown their way. They persevered in the opening set after trailing for much of it, then made it a competitive second set after falling behind 11-1.
Through it all, a 25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 25-23 victory showed.
No Class 2A volleyball team has won more consecutive state titles than River’s current four-year run. Senior setter Avery Seley (44 assists) and junior outside hitter Sophia Gourley (match-best 28 kills) are the two starters back from the 2024 state-title squad that captured its fourth consecutiv
