Coventry City Council has lost a High Court case against the Home Office's decision to house additional asylum seekers in the city. Despite being "proud" of its voluntary efforts to accommodate asylum seekers, the council initiated legal action, arguing that the number of migrants housed in Coventry was "excessive".

The council's lawyers claimed that the Home Office's failure to decrease the number of asylum seekers in Coventry more swiftly and the placement of additional asylum seekers were both "unlawful". However, on Friday, Mr Justice Eyre dismissed the claim.

In his 32-page judgement, he stated: "The defendant accepts that the number of asylum seekers accommodated in Coventry should be reduced."
