A Boston Logan International Airport runway reopened Friday after closing for more than two months as construction crews worked on safety upgrades.
Runway 9-27 has been shut down since Sept. 2 as part of a plan to install a “vital” new safety system meant to stop planes that have overshot the runway, Massport said.
“Due to the geography around the airport, this system is extremely important and is a FAA-approved method for achieving safety standards,” Massport wrote in an August press release . “This system is used at airports around the world and has prevented innumerable serious accidents.”
This safety feature is already in use on two other runways at the Boston airport, according to Massport. The system does not extend the runway or change its operational capacity.
