ASHEVILLE - Asheville "may be a targeted city" in U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deployments as the agencies are expected to make their way into North Carolina as early as the weekend of Nov. 14, Mayor Esther Manheimer said.

Manheimer released a statement on city of Asheville social media after Gov. Josh Stein published a statement earlier in the day addressing potential U.S. Border Patrol and ICE deployments in the state.

"We believe every person, regardless of immigration status, should feel safe in the community they call home. Asheville Police Department officers are dedicated to maintaining public safety, and as stated by Chief Lamb, APD does not have the authority to enforce immigration law," Manheimer's statement continued.
