FARGO — A Fargo woman who died from complications of a mosquito-borne virus is being remembered as a beloved teacher, dear friend and sister, problem-solver and cat lover.

Dyann “Dy” Fladland, 62, was hospitalized for seven weeks before succumbing on Nov. 7 to severe neurological disease caused by West Nile virus.

She was one of more than 80 North Dakota residents to test positive for West Nile in 2025 and appears to be the second person this year to die from the virus complications, based on state data.

While most people infected are asymptomatic, people 50 and older and those who are immunocompromised are more likely to get sicker from West Nile and possibly die from it, according to the state health department.
