An 18-year-old man has been charged with murder and attempted murder following the death of 17-year-old Lainie Williams in Cefn Fforest, South Wales. Lainie was discovered deceased at her home on Thursday morning. Her mother, Rhian Stephens, aged 38, sustained serious injuries but has since been discharged from hospital.
Police were called to a property on Wheatley Place at approximately 7.15am after receiving reports of two individuals with serious injuries. Gwent Police have charged the suspect, who is from Newbridge, with murder, attempted murder, and possession of a bladed article in a public place. He has been remanded in custody and is set to appear before Newport Magistrates' Court on Monday.
Assistant Chief Constable Vicki Townsend addressed the public's interest in the case, stating, "We understand that there has been a great deal of interest in this investigation. It is vital that people consider how their language, especially comments made online, could affect our ability to bring anyone found to have committed a criminal offence to justice."
She added that despite the significant development in the investigation, police enquiries are ongoing, and residents can expect to see officers in the area. Townsend encouraged anyone with information to come forward, saying, "If anyone has any information, please speak to our officers or contact us in the usual way."
Members of the public can reach out to the police by calling 101, sending a direct message on social media, or using the form on the Gwent Police website, quoting log reference 2500361653. Additionally, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously online or by phone.
