To be candid with with you I don’t recall ever using the creation for its intended purpose. I am referring here to the glove compartment or glove box. Perhaps I unconsciously put a pair of gloves in one but they were typically filled with maps, napkins, Kleenex packages, bottle opener, flashlight, ballpoint pen, notebook … You get the idea; there was no room in the original small compartments for gloves and all the other “necessary” stuff.
That was not the situation with early automobiles. Many were open to the weather. The first glove boxes were storage boxes under the driver’s seat. The dashboard was a carryover from carriages where a board was placed in front of the first seats
