For decades, Metro Goldwyn Mayer’s motto was “Ars Gratia Artis” — Latin for “Art for Art’s sake.”
Saturday afternoon in the bright, balmy November sunshine in Tiger Stadium, LSU held off Arkansas to win 23-22. Afterward its players lugged The Boot, supposedly the heaviest trophy in college football, under the goalposts and onto the field with such delight you would have thought it was the grand prize for winning the SEC or the CFP.
The Tigers will get nowhere near those spoils this season. But sometimes a win for winning’s sake, especially after your season has been blown to smithereens by three losses in the previous four games, can mean so much.
