In its first true test of the season, Butler basketball started strong before stumbling in the second half. Finley Bizjack had an attempt at the game-winner but his shot missed, giving SMU an 87-85 win.

Bizjack led Butler with 17 points. Michael Ajayi recorded his fourth straight double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
