Frank Fleming was having the perfect 50th birthday celebration. He dined on a $99 bone-in prime rib at a posh Chicago steakhouse, chatted with Mets legend Darryl Strawberry on FaceTime and took a group photo with his favorite hockey team on his way out of the restaurant.

Then, a day later, the bad news spread. Devils star Jack Hughes had suffered a “freak” injury at that restaurant and was facing an eight-week absence from the lineup. For the diehard Devils fan/Belleville native who ran into the team on a night that will now live in team infamy, it was a special day ruined.
