KALAMAZOO, MI — Kalamazoo City Manager Jim Ritsema will conclude a 13-year career with the city on Tuesday, Nov. 18 .
He’s leaving the city better than he found it, Commissioner Jeanne Hess said.
Ritsema’s tenure is marked by economic revitalization. From donor-funded budget boosts to a boom in economic development across the city, officials say his work will have a lasting impact on Kalamazoo.
Ritsema also contended with challenges while in the role, such as demands for increased transparency, assistance for the unhoused and police accountability.
Regardless of what played out, Ritsema always put his head down and worked on improvements, Hess said.
