A film tax bill described by opponents as “the largest corporate handout in Nevada history” squeaked by the Assembly on Sunday with a bare-minimum majority of votes.

It now moves to the state Senate where a similar close battle is expected.

The passage came during the fourth day of a special session of the Nevada Legislature called by Gov. Joe Lombardo to address urgent business not covered during the regular session that ended in June.

The bill for transferable film tax credits has overshadowed discussion of other legislation being considered such as a bill to toughen Nevada’s crime laws and one that would fund SNAP food benefits in the event of another federal shutdown.

One reason for the film tax drama is that the opposition was strongly bipartisan and so were the bill’s supporters.
