Police have adopted a zero-tolerance approach for dangerous jet ski riders following several horror incidents on the water.

A large-scale operation targeting "reckless" jet ski use in popular areas including Botany Bay, Brighton Le Sands and the foreshore in Sydney's south is now underway as Christmas nears.

Operation Summer Foreshore will see officers from the St George Police Area Command and Marine Area Command patrol and monitor high-traffic spots on the water and on the streets.

The operation officially began yesterday and will continue until February 1 next year.

Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism Yasmin Catley said the operation is part of the state's proactive policing to prevent crime on the water over summer.
