NEWBERRY, S.C. — Cheers, applause, and the sound of rolling wheels filled the air Sunday afternoon as the City of Newberry officially opened its brand-new skate park, marking a major milestone that community leaders and local skaters say has been years in the making.
Collin Shealy, Newberry’s Parks and Recreation tourism director, said the project has taken more than a year to bring to life, beginning with design discussions in early 2024 and construction starting in February.
"We ended up moving forward with 5th Pocket Skate Park, and once they came on scene, we were able to do this in about a month, so they hit the ground running and their teams was incredible working throughout the month of February of this year,” Shealy said.
The idea for the park originated with skater Philip Taylo
