A suspect is in custody following a homicide that took place in Birmingham on Sunday

Officers with the Birmingham Police Department first responded to a shooting in the 3500 block of Maple Avenue at 4 p.m. They discovered a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service transported the victim to the hospital, where he died, police said.

The suspect was taken into custody but has not been formally charged.

Detectives believe the suspect and the victim got into a verbal altercation that escalated and ended in gunfire.

The identity of the victim has not been released, pending notification of the family.
