BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - East Baton Rouge Parish voters rejected all three tax renewals on Saturday’s ballot in close races, with only 19 percent of registered voters participating.

Pollster Bernie Pinsonet said the low turnout was expected, citing a growing divide between downtown Baton Rouge and surrounding incorporated areas.

“You’ve got Villa St. George, you’ve got the Shenandoah area, you’ve got Central, you’ve got Zachary, and all of those areas really have literally pulled away from the city of Baton Rouge,” Pinsonet said. “They don’t care. They’re not going to go out and spend a lot of effort or spend time. They’ve got their own areas now. They’re incorporated. Bill of St. George is waiting on its own school system, Central, Zachary.”
