Diabetes, caused by the body's inability to produce or effectively use insulin, leads to high blood sugar levels. According to the new World Health Organisation (WHO) report, this chronic disease now affects over 800 million people globally, with roughly half of them remaining undiagnosed.
It is now affecting more pregnant women, with roughly 1 in 6 pregnancies worldwide now dealing with elevated blood sugar that translates to around 21 million women every year. On World Diabetes Day 2025 , the WHO issued its first-ever global recommendations for diabetes management during pregnancy.
