The tribunal court on Monday gave the death penalty to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and ex-Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. However, former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun escaped the noose and got just five years in jail as the court pronounced quantum of sentence for crimes against humanity during the July–August 2024 student-led uprising.
Hasina, 78, remains in exile in India and has defied orders to return and face trial. Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal is also a fugitive. Abdullah Al-Mamun, on the other hand, is in custody.
HOW EX-IGP ESCAPED THE NOOSE
Co-accused Mamun pleaded guilty and turned state witness. In July, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 granted his petition to testify as a state witness. This move helped him escape death penalty.
