Director Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” is almost too elegant and too visually stunning – despite being painted in shades of grey – to be called horror.

However, horror films are more a state of mind than anything and in that respect, “Frankenstein” fully establishes that vanities of the human mind are in fact horrors themselves as opposed to the ones attributed to those with physical deformities.

Based on the Mary Shelley novel that’s been told countless times on film with one of the best remaining the James Whale directed Universal Pictures 1931 classic, del Toro’s comes the closest to achieving that status.
