Most Americans consume more than enough sodium — over 3,300 milligrams a day on average, even though federal dietary guidelines recommend less than 2,300 milligrams a day, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.
“For most people, consistently consuming more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day can have negative health effects, including damage to the endothelial lining of blood vessels, increased blood pressure, and a higher risk of heart disease and plaque progression,” cardiology dietitian Michelle Routhenstein previously told TODAY.com.
